The Operating Room Registered Nurse (OR RN) will provide safe and skilled care of patients during their stay in the OR according to AORN standards and the Policies and Procedures of Cascade ENT Surgery Center.

Primary Job Functions:

  • Supervises, directs, and provides patient care in an individual operating room
  1. Ensures proper techniques and practices are used according to accepted standards of practice
  2. Supervises other personnel in the OR and directs or assists as necessary
  3. Immediately reports any unusual occurrences to charge personnel, documents appropriately in patient record, and completes incident reports if indicated
  • Performs scrub duties as necessary
  • Maintains counts on sponges, sharps, and instruments as necessary
  • Performs all circulating duties with efficiency and speed
  1. Prepares operating room for each case
  2. Has all supplies and equipment in room and provides to team as necessary
  3. Opens all sterile packs and supplies according to aseptic technique
  4. Reviews surgeon’s preference cards for desired medications and verifies same with surgeon
  5. Performs patient ID verification per policy
  6. Positions patient and adjusts table to proper position
  7. Performs or supervises surgical preps
  8. Supervises and assists scrub nurse as necessary
  9. Assists surgeons, anesthetists, and other personnel as needed to ensure good patient care
  10. Ensures all medications are administered and charted according to established policies and procedures
  11. Observes patient for changes in condition
  12. Identifies and records patient’s response to medication when necessary
  13. Promptly reports adverse events and medication errors
  14. Cares for specimens and cultures and maintains Pathology Log
  15. Maintains records of procedures and reports any unusual occurrences
  16. Provides orderly progression of schedule and notifies Admission Nurse of any delays
  17. Assists with transfer of patients from OR table to RR stretcher
  18. Accompanies patient to RR and reports on patient condition and any special happenings to ensure continuity of care
  • Provides for continuity of individual patient care
  1. As time allows, reviews patient record to facilitate knowledge of patient, condition, and needs
  2. Performs patient verification audit prior to surgery
  3. Institutes Time Out procedure in OR prior to every surgery
  4. Refers to resource material (Nursing Drug Handbook, AORN) whenever necessary
  • Assists in control and maintenance of supplies and equipment
  1. Stocks supplies in OR at conclusion of surgery day
  2. Records needed supplies in Supply Book for re-ordering
  • Breaks down sterile field at conclusion of surgery
  1. Removes and disposes of contaminated and used items in appropriate receptacles
  2. Disposes of sharps in appropriate container according to established policies and procedures
  3. Performs cleaning of the OR according to established policies and procedures
  4. Moistens contaminated instruments prior to sending to Decontamination Room
  5. Assists in control of traffic and personnel to ensure proper control of infection and asepsis
  • Assumes accountability and responsibility for own work performance and those under immediate supervision
  • Observes assigned work schedules and hours
  • Performs competently in new situations
  • Maintains good rapport with fellow team members, physicians, and anesthesia personnel
  • Performs duties in a professional and pleasant manner
  • Follows Surgery Center dress code regarding clothing, jewelry, artificial nails, and hair

Secondary Job Functions:

  • Assists in orientation and training of new personnel
  • Assists in OR staff development and education
  • Assists in evaluation of all OR activities, nursing care given, and of personnel and techniques
  • Attends daily huddle prior to surgery
  • Attends monthly Surgery Center staff meetings
  • Assists in narcotic inventory as requested
  • Performs duties in Recovery Room or Admission as assigned
  • Reviews and updates the surgeon’s preference cards as necessary
  • May be required to perform other related tasks for which qualified


  • Work hours prior to 0700 and after 1700 depending on needs of Surgery Center
  1. Arrive 60 minutes prior to first surgery
  2. Possible Saturday rotation
  3. Possible weekday evening rotation
  • Must be able to withstand:
  1. Unpleasant smells, sounds, and sites
  2. Working in rooms with wide temperature variation
  3. Wearing walkie-talkie ear device for communication
  4. Frequent hand washing
  • Ability to perform work that requires frequent standing, bending, reaching, squatting, kneeling, moving, and lifting patients and/or equipment up to 50lbs
  1. Any lifting over 35lbs requires use of an assistive device and/or physical assistance
  • Knowledge that breaks and lunch periods are variable in timing

Other Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of OR nursing and standards
  • Be proficient with defibrillator and AED devices
  • Knowledge of Patient Rights
  • Knowledge of ASC fire and safety regulations, electrical hazards, disaster plans, and infection control policies
  • Knowledge and training in the perioperative care of the surgical patient
  • Knowledge of specialized equipment used in the operating room
  • Knowledge of anesthetic agents and their usage and effect on the surgical patient


  • Current license to practice professional nursing in Washington State
  • In current standing with all Washington State licensing requirements
  • Current ACLS & PALS certification
